Out of the 6,000 islands belonging to Greece, very few of them are visited by tourists and only 227 of them are inhabited at all. Below are some information on the seven most tourist frequented Greek island hopping destinations.

Corfu.
Lying to the west of Greece, Corfu became one of the first tourist destinations within the Greek islands. It has a very refreshing and exciting nightlife and has some of the most beautiful beaches in the islands with the northern and western region having the most prominent beaches. With millions of Europeans and Americans travelling there every year, Corfu is certainly one great vacation destination for people of all ages.

Crete.
It is the biggest of the Greek islands in terms of land area and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Being a popular tourist destination and a cruise ship port, Crete receives more than two million visitors every year arriving via Heraklion, its capital and largest city. Crete, aside from its relaxing beaches and invigorating nightlife, has a magnificent mountain range which further increases the appeal of everything else the island has to offer.

Zante.
Also called Zakynthos by the Greeks, Zante lies in the southernmost region of the Ionian chain of holiday islands that follow the coastline of western Greece. The island has great holiday beaches and a tranquil atmosphere and its geography is characterized by fertile plains, rough hills, wild cliffs and sweeping sands. If you explore farther from the holiday resorts, you will come across quiet fishing villages and a rugged countryside that will captivate you and make you stay a little while longer.

Kos.
This island is very popular among British tourists especially its eastern and southern coastlines. Lying in the middle of the Dodecanese chain islands, Kos is only 45 km long but it has some of the most remarkable beaches in the Greek islands. As the island itself consists mainly of flat plains which constitute its extremely flat land area, cycling has become both an ideal means of transport and an alternative form of recreation.

Rhodes.
It is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of land area and population with over half of its total population living in its capital Homonymous. Rhodes takes pride in its 300 days of glorious sunshine every year so you can always be assured of a fine weather whenever you decide to spend your holidays there. Few of the island’s popular resorts such as Falikari, are now devoted to package tourism which in turn improved the quality of nightlife in the island albeit at the cost of losing part of its local culture.

Skiathos.
It is a small island in the Aegean Sea and lies in the westernmost region of the Northern Sporades group of islands. Having more than sixty sandy beaches scattered around its coastline, it is no doubt, a sunbather’s paradise. From Skiathos, the island of Skopelos can be seen and during a clear day, even the more distant islands of Euboea and Scyros are also visible. Skiathos is a quiet island and most of its land area is filled with farmland. Although this island is not as popular to the tourists as the other Greek islands are, it nevertheless managed to preserve a great deal of Greek culture which makes a good bonus to your usual package holiday.

Santorini.
This island was born from an active volcano to which the fumes still pluming out of the offshore volcano testify. This island is a popular destination for cruise ship operators and as the sunset looks stunningly beautiful from this island, it has earned popularity throughout the world in this respect. There are always bargains to be had in Santorini and a number of hostels can accommodate around thousands of independent travelers.
